Guardians
Hadron, Bearer of the Hollow Eye
The enigmatic leader of the guardians, Hadron is the seer and steady centre of Shadow Fen. He wields the Sigil of the Hollow Eye, a relic that blinds the Dark King’s omniscience and suspends his awareness beyond time and place. Wise, measured, and deliberately cryptic, Hadron speaks rarely of his origins.
There are rumours, whispered even among the Vanguard, that Hadron carries some deeper connection to the Dark King. Whether this is truth, distortion, or deliberate misinformation remains unknown, even to the guardians themselves. Hadron neither confirms nor denies it. As vocalist and ritual focus of Shadow Fen, his voice anchors concealment, prophecy, and misdirection, continually renewing the magic that holds the prison intact.
The Fallen, Bearer of the Shackled Flame
The Fallen is the eternal bearer of Wrath. She existed before the Sundering, endures beyond it, and moves across fractured realities with a constancy few understand. Bound to the Sigil of the Shackled Flame, she contains the Dark King’s rage, suppressing destruction through discipline, rhythm, and resonance.
She was the first guardian to cross into the modern world in an event remembered as The Fall, carrying Wrath beyond Shadow Fen to seek a means of sustaining the prison without annihilating reality. As bassist of Shadow Fen, The Fallen channels fury into structure. Her Bassaxe, forged from relics and sigil-bound matter, converts aggression into containment. Every note restrains catastrophe.
Kappa the Arcane Alchemist, Bearer of the Drowned Star
A Riftborn outsider drawn into Shadow Fen by visions he could not ignore, Kappa wields the Sigil of the Drowned Star, which binds the Dark King’s madness and dream-warping influence. His intellect is sharp, volatile, and creative, blending alchemical theory with instinctive musical expression.
As lead guitarist of Shadow Fen, Kappa’s spectral solos stabilise the boundary between nightmare and waking reality. He walks the edge between insight and collapse, transforming chaos into psychic defence through sound.
Thorin Stormbeard, Bearer of the Withered Tongue
Once a solitary ranger, Thorin uncovered the Sigil of the Withered Tongue in a ruined shrine deep within corrupted woodland. By binding himself to it, he gained the power to silence lies, sever manipulation, and resist the Dark King’s corrupting influence.
Thorin forged an enchanted guitar from the shrine’s remains, turning music into a weapon of clarity and refusal. As rhythm guitarist of Shadow Fen, he grounds their sound and their purpose, providing structure where others strain against the abyss.
The Forgemaster, Bearer of the Maw
The newest guardian, The Forgemaster was chosen by the Sigil of the Maw, a dire wolf bone relic embodying Hunger. A craftsman and drummer, he reforged the sigil into a war-drum that devours the Dark King’s appetite through relentless rhythm.
The Forge of Echoes manifests only to him, unseen but unmistakable in its effects. Each strike consumes corruption, keeping the gnawing void at bay. His beats do not merely accompany the ritual. They enforce it.
Antagonists
The Dark King
An ancient, unknowable force of ruin and dominion. Before the Sundering, his power grew unchecked, spreading hunger, madness, and corruption across worlds. He was bound by the original guardians, his essence fractured and sealed within the Bone Sigils.
Though imprisoned, the Dark King is not silent. He influences the weak-willed through dreams, whispers, and distortion. His prison holds, but it strains. Every lapse is an invitation.
Cultists and Dark Adepts
Mortals who serve the Dark King in the waking world. Organised into secretive sects such as the Gloambound and the Mouthless Choir, they seek to weaken the sigil bindings and reopen the crossings. Their leaders are warped by prolonged exposure to the Dark King’s essence, trading sanity for power.
Demons, Beasts, and Minions
The following represent the most commonly encountered manifestations of the Dark King’s influence:
Nightmare Leeches
Shadow-spawn that feed on memory, hope, and unguarded thought.
Abyssal Hounds
Bone-armoured predators that hunt by tracking corrupted sigil resonance.
Hollowed Ones
Mortals stripped of self through prolonged exposure to the Dark King’s dreams, left as obedient husks.
Allies
The Vanguard and the Shadow Fen Folk
Scattered across the settlements of the Mirror Realm and the modern world alike, the Vanguard are mortal allies who have chosen to stand with the guardians. Farmers, smiths, scholars, artists, technicians, and raiders, they form the living backbone of resistance.
While the guardians hold the sigils and sustain the prison, the Vanguard defend the land, preserve knowledge, and pass down the truth of the Sundering. This is not symbolic.
Every member of the modern-day audience who believes, who chants, who carries the music forward, is canonically counted among the Vanguard. Their voices strengthen the wards. Their belief holds the line.
Shadow Fen does not endure alone.
