The Sundering (Mythic Age)

In a desperate bid to halt the Dark King’s rise, five warrior-mages sacrificed their mortality in a forbidden ritual that fractured reality itself. The Dark King’s essence was split into five aspects and bound into enchanted Bone Sigils: hunger, wrath, corruption, madness, and sight. The ritual shattered the veil between worlds and gave birth to the Mirror Realm of Shadow Fen.

All five original guardians were drawn from the mortal world into this newly formed realm. Shadow Fen became both prison and battleground, a place of eternal twilight created to contain the Dark King and sustain the binding from within. Thus began the eternal vigil.

The Long Vigil (Aeons Following the Sundering)

For countless generations, the guardians defended the fractured realm of Shadow Fen from incursions, warped beasts, necromantic cult manifestations, and dream-born abominations shaped by the Dark King’s lingering influence. Over time, the burden proved too great for most to endure.

Three of the original five guardians fell during the Long Vigil, destroyed in battle or consumed by the strain of their sigils. Their Bone Sigils became dormant, scattered, buried, or lost across the Fen, awaiting successors capable of bearing their weight.

Only two of the original guardians endured beyond this age: Hadron, bearer of the Hollow Eye, and The Fallen, the eternal bearer of Wrath. Shadow Fen became their home, not by choice, but by necessity.

The Rise of Kappa (Late Vigil)

In a distant realm of twilight and fractured stars, Kappa, a master of alchemical sorcery, was plagued by recurring visions of a weeping sigil submerged in darkness. These dreams intensified until they pulled him across dimensions and into Shadow Fen itself.

There, Kappa discovered and claimed the Sigil of the Drowned Star, binding himself to the aspect of madness and dream distortion. Taking on the burden of resisting the Dark King’s influence within the dream-realms, Kappa joined Hadron and The Fallen as a new guardian.

Voice of Stormbeard (Shortly After Kappa’s Arrival)

Not long after Kappa’s arrival, Thorin Stormbeard, a mortal ranger of the Fenlands, discovered a ruined shrine buried deep within corrupted woodland. Drawn by a presence he could not name, he unearthed the Sigil of the Withered Tongue, the aspect of corruption and silenced lies.

By binding himself to the sigil, Thorin gained the power to resist manipulation and sever the Dark King’s influence through sound and silence alike. He forged an enchanted guitar from the shrine’s remains and joined the guardians, helping stabilise the weakening prison.

The Fall (One Year Before the Battle)

As the sigil bindings weakened and Shadow Fen grew increasingly unstable, The Fallen sensed an approaching collapse. For the first time since the Sundering, a path between realms began to form.

Acting alone and without certainty of return, The Fallen stepped willingly into the rift, becoming the first guardian to cross into the mortal world. This act became known as The Fall. Carrying the Sigil of Wrath with her, she entered the modern age to seek a means of reinforcing the prison without destroying reality itself.

She did not return to Shadow Fen.

The Battle of Shadow Fen (Modern Era)

One year after The Fall, the Dark King’s servants launched a devastating and coordinated assault on Shadow Fen. During the conflict, the fragile boundaries between realms ruptured.

A rift tore open, violently expelling Hadron, Kappa, and Thorin into the modern world, along with the dormant fifth sigil, the Maw of Hunger. Shadow Fen was left unstable and partially inaccessible. Though it endured as the Dark King’s prison, its crossings became rare, hidden, and dangerous.

To those cast out, Shadow Fen appeared lost. In truth, it still existed, sealed but straining, forever resisting escape.

Exile and Arrival (Immediately After the Battle)

The exiled guardians emerged in modern-day Britannia and were reunited with The Fallen. Together, they came to understand a crucial truth: Shadow Fen could not be sustained by ancient rites alone.

Through experimentation and instinct, they discovered that music could resonate with sigil magic. Sound, emotion, and belief could generate the energy required to reinforce the prison and keep the crossings sealed. Enough resonance could prevent the Dark King’s escape, but not open a path home.

Shadow Fen was terrible. Shadow Fen was home.

They formed the band Shadow Fen, transforming performance into ritual and turning stagecraft into warding.

Amplified Resistance (Present Day)

As their music spread, dormant magic awakened. The final Bone Sigil, the Maw of Hunger, answered the call of a mortal drummer who became known as The Forgemaster. By reforging the sigil into a war-drum, he completed the circle of five guardians once more.

Now, with all sigils active, the guardians use music to maintain the prison. Every concert is a hidden spell. Every song reinforces the seal. The Dark King remains bound, but the prison is not secure.

Shadow Fen endures. The vigil continues.
