Origin and Role
The Vanguard are the mortal allies of the Guardians, ordinary people who have found themselves bound to Shadow Fen through circumstance, resonance, or choice. Some were drawn across the veil by prophecy or dream. Others crossed by accident, following unstable paths that should not have existed. Many were once inhabitants of the modern world, wanderers, outsiders, and seekers who glimpsed a deeper truth and stepped into the mists despite the cost.
When the Dark King’s prison began to strain, Shadow Fen stirred. With that stirring came those who refused to turn away. Over time, displaced mortals gathered into small communities across the Fen, learning how to survive its dangers and defend what fragile stability remained. From these people emerged the Vanguard.
The Vanguard are not chosen by sigils. They do not carry fragments of the Dark King. Instead, they serve as scouts, defenders, builders, messengers, and keepers of memory. Many learn to attune themselves to the ambient resonance of Shadow Fen, allowing them to participate in minor rituals, reinforce wards, and amplify the Guardians’ performances. Their power lies in persistence, coordination, and belief.
Without the Vanguard, the Guardians could not hold the line alone.
The Vanguard maintain settlements, guard hidden crossings, recover relics from ruined sites, and raise the alarm when cult activity or nightmare incursions are detected. Some operate as intermediaries between Shadow Fen and the modern world, quietly guiding those already close to the veil toward purpose rather than oblivion.
Joining the Vanguard
The Vanguard continues to grow.
In the modern world, joining is not a matter of force or command. It is an act of alignment. To stand with the Vanguard is to recognise the truth of the struggle and choose to take part in it.
Fans of Shadow Fen are not observers. They are canonically part of the Vanguard.
Through belief, participation, and sound, they strengthen the bindings. At live performances, rituals are embedded in rhythm, lyric, and response. Chants, harmonies, and call-and-response passages act as distributed wards. The audience does not witness the magic. They generate it.
Each performance becomes a stabilising act. Each voice reinforces the prison. Each raised hand contributes to the seal.

Settlements and Life in the Fen
While the Guardians move where they are needed, the Vanguard have established permanent settlements across Shadow Fen. These places are not safe, but they endure.
Mistbrook
A central trading settlement built near the convergence of three stable paths. Mistbrook houses the oldest archive of recovered knowledge, maintained by librarians trained in sigil theory and ritual history.
Wyrd Hollow
Hidden deep in drowned woodland, Wyrd Hollow is known for herbalists, ward-crafters, and quiet fighters. Its people listen closely to the Fen and live according to its rhythms.
Northmere Watch
A fortified encampment on the edge of unstable territory. Vanguard rangers stationed here are elite scouts and monster-hunters who monitor cult movement and sigil disturbances.
Candlefen
Founded by modern-world exiles, Candlefen blends salvaged technology with ritual practice. Lanterns hum with warding energy. Circuits and runes coexist. It is loud, defiant, and stubbornly alive.
Sorrow’s Rise
A ruined site of pilgrimage and training. Those who come here seek reflection, discipline, or communion with echoes of the Sundering. Guardians sometimes manifest here through dream or sound.
Each settlement honours one of the five sigils through art, song, or seasonal rites. At certain gatherings, the Guardians may appear indirectly through music, vision, or resonance to guide, test, or acknowledge those who stand watch.
Shadow Fen is not kind. It is unstable, damp, dangerous, and scarred by ancient war. But it is inhabited. It is defended. It is held.
And as long as the Vanguard endures, the prison holds.
